Second Hand September Seekd Style

This past month has been Oxfam’s Second Hand September which not only grows in popularity year after year, but also grows in importance as fast fashion is putting increasing pressure on our planet. The fashion industry is responsible for almost 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon emissions and 11 million items of clothing are sent to landfill every week in the UK alone. And, according to Greenpeace, this throwaway culture shows no signs of slowing down with clothing consumption set to rise by 63% by 2030, while we wear our clothes 40% less than we did 10 years ago. Something doesn’t add up here. And that’s where choosing second hand or recycled items can help. Extending the lifespan of a piece by just nine months can reduce its environmental footprint by up to 30%, according to WRAP. So imagine that piece being passed to a new home over and over. Not to mention those absolute gems you can find during a good rummage in your local charity and vintage shops, and that rush when it fits juuuuust right.

Pair these second hand finds with jewellery that has been made from metals recycled from everyday items, such as electronics, medical equipment, kitchenware and even photographs without losing any of its quality. From saving plants, wildlife and habitats, to reducing CO2 emissions, toxic waste and energy, working with recycled silver saves 95% more energy compared to using raw materials. Recycling and upcycling is just one of the many strategies used by Seekd designers to reduce their impact and a reason we are proud to bring these sustainable solutions to luxury powerhouse, Harvey Nichols.

We are always adding newness to our edit; meet the new designers on our designer page and check out some of our September faves below.
